What is cold-process soap? The 6-week cure, explained

"Cold-process soap" gets thrown around a lot, but not everyone using the phrase actually does it. Here's what it means, why the 6-week cure matters, and how to tell a real cold-process bar from something dressed up to look like one.
What cold-process actually meansCold-process soap is made by combining oils (or fats) with a lye solution at low temperature — typically around 100°F. The lye and oils undergo a chemical reaction called saponification, which transforms them into soap and glycerin. No external heat is applied to force the reaction along, hence the name.
The reaction is complete within 24 to 48 hours. But the bar isn't ready yet — that's where the cure comes in.
What happens during the 6–8 week cureThree things, none of them optional:
- Water evaporates. A fresh bar is about 30% water. After 6 weeks, it's closer to 15%. That water loss is what makes the bar dense, hard, and long-lasting.
- Crystal structure sets. Soap molecules slowly organize into a stable crystalline lattice. This is what gives cured soap its silky feel and stable lather.
- pH drops. Fresh soap sits at about pH 10. A properly cured bar drifts down toward 9 — much closer to your skin's natural pH.
A lot of "handmade" bars are actually melt-and-pour — a premade glycerin base that's melted, colored, and re-poured. That's not cold-process. Real cold-process bars have visible imperfections: a slightly rough top, small variations in color, sometimes a soft powdery layer called "soda ash." Melt-and-pour is glassy-smooth and uniform because it's made from a pre-manufactured base.
