What makes a soap actually natural? A body-soap buyer's guide

"Natural body soap" is one of the most searched terms in skincare — and one of the most abused. The word natural has no legal definition on a soap label in the US, which is why grocery-store bars stamped with leaves and mountains can still be almost entirely detergent.

What "natural body soap" should actually mean

A genuinely natural soap has three things in common:

  • Real saponified oils and butters — olive, coconut, castor, cocoa butter, shea, tallow — not synthetic surfactants like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • Cold-process or hot-process manufacture — meaning it's made from scratch, not melted from a pre-made base
  • No synthetic fragrance — scent from essential oils and botanicals, not "fragrance" or "parfum" (which can hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals)
Red flags on the ingredient list

Turn the bar over. If you see any of these, it isn't natural, no matter what the front says:

  • Sodium Lauryl / Laureth Sulfate — a foaming detergent, not soap
  • Fragrance / Parfum — a legal shield for undisclosed synthetics
  • EDTA / Tetrasodium EDTA — a chelating agent used to stabilize detergent-based bars
  • Propylene Glycol / PEG-anything — petroleum-derived solvents
  • DMDM Hydantoin, Methylisothiazolinone — synthetic preservatives
What a real natural soap label looks like

Short, recognizable, mostly ingredients you could name in your kitchen. A typical GHAM bar reads: olive oil, tallow, coconut oil, castor oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, sodium hydroxide, water, essential oil, clay. Sodium hydroxide (lye) reacts with the oils during saponification — it isn't in the finished bar.

Why cold-process is the gold standard

Cold-process soap keeps the glycerin that saponification produces — the natural humectant that keeps your skin from feeling tight after a wash. Commercial soap-makers strip and sell it separately. That single choice is the biggest reason handmade natural soap feels different on your skin from the first use.
